PRIVATE FRANK HOWSON
Frank Howson was the youngest of three children
(at the time of the 1901 Census) born to Charles A and Rachel Howson.
Rachel was Charles' second wife, his first,
Lilian Eliza died in 1894 aged 32 years.
Together, Charles and Eiza, as she was known, had two daughters, Florence Emily
and, Annie. With Rachel Charles had three sons, Samuel, Charles Arthur and, Frank.
Charles Alma Howson was born in South
Ferriby near Hull. In the 1891 Census, he was described as an employed bricklayer, but by 1901 he had become an employer,
presumably running his own building firm.
The family lived at 63 Westfield Road, Leeds at this time, but later moved
to Red Hall Lane, Shadwell.
The three Howson sons were all of military age at some stage during the Great War,
but as yet it has only been possible to positively identify the service of Samuel, the eldest of the sons. He attested for
the 17th Battalion (2nd Leeds) (Bantams), The West Yorkshire Regiment, however, he was found to be unfit for military service
and discharged after only four days service.
