Other Information / Remarks
Walker Sayes was born in Holbeck, Leeds, and enlisted in Leeds. His brother John, was commissioned into a Territorial Force Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment on 5 August 1916. John Sayes survived the war.

The PS/ prefix to Walker Sayes' service number indicates that this was one of the Public Schools Battalions. In the early days of the war many ex-public schoolboys enlisted into the ranks. As the attritional nature of the war took its toll, many of the men of these battalions were commissioned and became officers.

Although the Commonwealth War Graves Commission identifies Walker Sayes father as I. G. Sayes, the 1901 census clearly gives his name as John George Sayes, a 39 years old jeweller who specialised in gold. The family also had Eliza Ann Kilburn, the 52 years old mother of Mrs Sayes living with them, although she is stated to be living on her own means. Walker and John Sayes Mother was called Mary Eliza Sayes.
