Ernest Thorpe had previously served with the West Yorkshire Regiment under the service numbers 23386 and 107711. He was a
despatch rider. He lived at Croft End in Barwick in Elmet.
Ernest Thorpe's mother and half brother, John W. Rithchie were from Scotland, although Ernest was born in Barwick. His
father was a colliery labourer.
